NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg arrived in South Korea on Sunday at the start of a visit aimed at strengthening the partnership between the Asian country and the Atlantic alliance in the face of China’s rise as a regional power that is «rapidly expanding its nuclear capability» or the «global threat» posed by North Korea.

«Our security is more interconnected than ever,» the Norwegian has applauded in a message posted on his Twitter account at the start of a two-day visit to the country to defend «the international order.»

NATO must face «global threats and challenges, including those posed by China,» Stoltenberg told South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

«China is investing heavily in new modern military capabilities, long-range missiles that can reach all of NATO territory, and is significantly and rapidly expanding its nuclear capability,» he said.

Soltenberg also charged that the Beijing government is «coercing and intimidating countries, for example, in the South China Sea region, an important place for global trade.»

«We need to address these global threats and challenges, including the challenges coming from China, and one way to do that is, of course, to work more closely with partners in the region,» he emphasized, before also recalling the «global threat» posed by North Korea’s ballistic tests.
