Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced Sunday the start of an investigation to determine the validity of a document submitted by the opposition Azimio la Umoja movement, led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which accuses the country’s current president, William Ruto, of committing fraud in the August 9 elections last year.
The case is in the hands of the head of the DCI, Mohamed Amin, now in charge of determining if the dossier presented by the movement could contain «falsifications» in its accusations to the Independent Electoral Commission, which it has pointed out for favoring the current president and winner of the elections.
Odinga assures that the report contains truthful information from a «confidant» of the Commission, which «reflects the true result of the elections», reports the Sunday edition of the newspaper ‘The Nation’.
The opposition leader has been giving himself these days crowd baths in several cities of the country until a final rally this Sunday in the capital, Nairobi, in which he insisted that his party won the victory «by more than two million votes of difference».
«Azimio stands firm in his fight for the millions of Kenyans who gave us a decisive victory. The Ruto-led regime must go. No handshake, no deals, no agreements, no retreat!», Odinga has assured through a message on his Twitter account.
It is not the first time that Odinga, backed by outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, rejects the results of the polls in which Ruto won with 50.5 percent of the vote, alleging fraud. He also refused to attend the inauguration of his successor, which took place on September 13.
The Kenyan Supreme Court rejected in September the appeals presented by the opposition and endorsed the victory of Ruto, until then vice-president of the country and distanced from Kenyatta due to their constant tensions during the last years.
Last week Ruto denounced the existence of a plot to kidnap and assassinate the head of the electoral commission, Wafula Chebukati, after the ratification of his victory in the presidential elections last summer.
«It was a hard, cold and lonely time, the threats were great, but the promised rewards have been plentiful,» he said, before accusing the «system» of this alleged plot to assassinate Chebukati.
