The Peruvian Congress debates this Thursday up to three proposals to bring forward elections to 2023 after the plenary rejected the text presented by the president of the Constitution Committee, Hernando Guerra García, only supported by Fuerza Popular.
Shortly after the beginning of the debate, the congressmen have rejected the first of the three projects on the advancement of elections presented by the deputies Alejandro Cavero and Adriana Tudela, of Avanza País, with 53 votes in favor, 70 against and 2 abstentions.
The text reflected the change of the representatives’ mandate for July of this year, as well as a provision to hold a referendum for the calling of a Constituent Assembly, as reported by the Peruvian RPP.
The second proposal, presented the day before by the congressman of Peru Libre, Jaime Quito –although he has subsequently retouched some details–, proposes the elections for the second week of July 2023 and the change of mandate for October 1.
Finally, the proposal of the Government of Peru, announced on Wednesday by President Dina Boluarte, will be debated, which contemplates general elections on October 8, 2023, as well as four provisions for the President’s term to end on December 31, while the congressmen would finish their term on December 29, 2023.
Peru is immersed in a deep political crisis after the dismissal of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who announced last December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.
Following the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people came out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. More than 60 people have lost their lives in the riots between demonstrators and security forces.
