Former U.S. President Donald Tump has made a payment of more than 900,000 euros to a Florida court to put on hold a lawsuit against him requiring him to pay 850,000 euros for alleging «frivolous» conspiracy without legal basis against former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and other political figures.
The Republican leader and his lawyer Alina Habba have offered to pay the amount of 1.03 million dollars (about 920,000 euros) while filing an appeal to the order of a federal judge, which fined about 937,000 dollars (850,000 euros) to the former president for filing a lawsuit without any legal basis and for purely political reasons against rivals like Hillary Clinton or former FBI Director James Comey.
According to Bloomberg, Trump and Habba have offered to pay a bail even higher than those requested by the court, also asking it to suspend its order while they appeal.
The candidate for re-election to the White House and his team of lawyers have stated that their offer represents 110 percent of the total fine and that it is not opposed by Clinton.
The case was filed in March last year by Trump’s lawyer — also fined in this ruling — Alina Habba, and involves a lawsuit brought by Clinton, Comey and the Democratic National Committee among others for allegedly orchestrating a conspiracy against him by accusing him of collaborating with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
«Its inadequacy as a legal claim was apparent from the beginning,» the federal judge in charge of the case confirmed about Trump’s lawsuit. «No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim,» he has added.
