The Russian government has assured Monday that it has taken control of the Ukrainian town of Nikolaevka, located in the Donetsk region (east), the main focus of fighting in recent weeks amid attempts by Russian forces to advance in this area of the country.
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said that the locality «has been liberated» within the framework of «successful offensive operations» carried out by «volunteers of assault detachments supported by missile and artillery troops of the Southern Group».
Thus, he stressed that about 90 Ukrainian servicemen have been killed in the fighting, while two infantry vehicles and two armored vehicles have been destroyed, the Russian news agency Interfax reported. Russia claimed last week to have seized the Ukrainian locality of Blahodatne, also located in the Donetsk region.
