The Ukrainian Parliament on Tuesday ratified Vasil Maliuk as head of the Intelligence Services, a post he had held on an interim basis since July 2022 following the dismissal of his predecessor, Ivan Bakanov.
«General Vasil Maliuk has been appointed head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU),» MP Oleksi Honcharenko said via his Telegram account. «The Parliament has approved the proposal submitted by the President of Ukraine,» he noted.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky appointed Maliuk as acting head of the SBU on July 18, 2022, a day after announcing the dismissal of Bakanov and the country’s Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova amid accusations against employees of both agencies for alleged treasonous acts.
According to the decree published on the Ukrainian Presidential website, Bakalov was dismissed in accordance with Article 47 of the Disciplinary Statute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which alludes to «failure to perform (or improper performance of) service duties with the consequent cost of human lives.»
Finally, Zelensky submitted a proposal to Parliament on Monday to appoint Maliuk as head of the SBU for all purposes, after which the Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence recommended that deputies proceed to endorse the appointment, Ukrinform Ukrainian news agency reported.
