The Russian Defense Ministry has reported that its Armed Forces deployed in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone have registered a violation of the new ceasefire signed in mid-September between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

«There was a violation of the ceasefire regime in the Martakert region (in Nagorno Karabakh). There were no casualties,» reads a report published in the Russian Defense Ministry Bulletin and picked up by the TASS news agency.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the peacekeeping contingent in the disputed region, together with representatives of both parties to the conflict, has initiated an investigation process to determine this ceasefire violation.

«Russian peacekeepers are continuing the negotiation process to resume unimpeded movement of road transport on the Stepanakert-Goris highway,» the Russian Defense Ministry has concluded.

Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a cease-fire agreement in mid-September to put an end to the crusade that began days earlier and left 155 people dead, most of them on the Armenian side. Following this outbreak of hostilities, both Baku and Moscow outlined cease-fire proposals.

Armenia and Azerbaijan were engaged in a confrontation in 2020 to take control of Nagorno Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population which has been the focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the region of Azerbaijan integrated into the Soviet Union.

Hostilities between the two countries lasted six weeks and left thousands dead. They finally ceased when the two countries reached a Russian-brokered cease-fire agreement allowing Russian peacekeepers to settle in Nagorno-Karabakh for a period of five years.
