U.S. President Joe Biden has warned China that it is «not a good idea» to bet against the United States and has assured that he will act to protect U.S. sovereignty if it is threatened.

Days after the U.S. government decided to shoot down the alleged Chinese spy balloon that flew in the country’s airspace, Biden has stated in his State of the Union address that he will not apologize for trying to strengthen the United States.

«I will not apologize because we are investing to strengthen America. Investing in American innovation, in industries that will define the future and that the Chinese government is trying to dominate,» the White House tenant asserted during his speech.

Thus, the U.S. president assured that since he took office the United States has regained influence in the world, while it is in «the strongest position in decades» to compete with China.

Biden also said that the West is facing «serious challenges», and that democracies «have become stronger» while autocracies «have become weaker».

For this reason, the U.S. president stressed the role of the United States in the world to face «those challenges,» which range from climate and global health to food insecurity, terrorism and territorial aggression.

«Bridges are being formed between Pacific partners and Atlantic partners. And those who would bet against the United States are learning how wrong they are,» Biden remarked.

Nevertheless, he reached out to Chinese President Xi Jinping, assuring that he seeks competition, but not conflict.

«I have made it clear to President Xi that we seek competition, not conflict (…) I am committed to working with China where I can advance American interests and benefit the world,» said the president.
