UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged that the possible dispatch of fighter jets to Ukraine «is part of the talks» held during the day with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, who visited London on Wednesday.
«When it comes to the combat air force, of course it is part of the talks (…) That is why today we have announced that we will train the Ukrainian Air Force on NATO standard platforms,» remarked the head of the British government during a press conference with Zelenski.
Asked whether London will give the «green light» to the supply of fighter jets, Sunak emphasized that the UK «has been very clear» about providing military assistance to Ukraine and stressed that «nothing is off the table», according to the BBC.
Zelenski, for his part, expressed his «deep gratitude» for the latest talks held with Sunak, although he did not go into details for security reasons. The Ukrainian president described the meeting with the British Prime Minister as «very fruitful», as it has helped London to understand Kiev’s needs.
In this sense, Sunak assured the Ukrainian president that London «will always» be by Kiev’s side and that he can consider the British as a «faithful and unwavering friend». In this sense, the ‘premier’ has remarked his intention to accelerate the shipment of armament to reach Ukraine in weeks, and not in months or even years.
Regarding the British support to Ukraine, Sunak highlighted the fact that up to 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have traveled to the United Kingdom to receive training in the use and handling of battle tanks, something which, according to the Premier, will make a difference and will serve to «push back» Russia.
And for the prime minister it is remarkable that Ukrainians are learning to use the modern weaponry of the West and the Atlantic Alliance. «Dedication, courage and determination are a merit for you and your country,» Sunak remarked.
