The Chilean government has declared a curfew in the regions of Biobío, Ñuble and La Araucanía due to the wave of fires affecting areas of central and southern Chile that has left 24 people dead.
The measure, which will be implemented this Thursday after a meeting of the Chilean authorities with the Defense chiefs of each region, seeks to «guarantee the safety of the families affected by the emergency», as reported by ‘BioBio Chile’.
«We had an important region with the commanders in chief of the three branches of the Armed Forces and the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where I let them know that the Government considers necessary the establishment of curfews», has indicated in declarations to the press the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric.
«We were talking, we saw the pros and cons, and it is the Defense chiefs who are going to determine, specifically, in which provinces and at what times», he added.
In this context, the Chilean president informed of the authorization of a decree to requisition tools, machinery and even water to face the emergency.
«We are not here to take a photo, but to work and in that sense, we have the whole government, its authorities and we count on the communal and regional authorities, working together», Boric emphasized.
The meteorological situation continues with high temperatures, so that red alerts continue in the regions of Biobío, Ñuble and La Araucanía, as well as in various localities in the region of Maule, Los Ríos and Los Lagos.
Hundreds of troops are working in the firefighting efforts, in which countries from Latin America and outside the region are collaborating by providing equipment and personnel.
