Francisco Jiménez resigned as Ecuador’s Minister of Government on Thursday after the ‘no’ vote in last weekend’s constitutional referendum in which President Guillermo Lasso sought to approve a series of security, institutional and environmental reforms.
The former Minister of Government has shared a publication in his Twitter profile where he assures that having been able to serve the country and President Lasso has been «an honor and a great learning» for him, while wishing «strength and success» to his successor.
Jiménez also acknowledged that today in Ecuador there are many pending debts in the social, economic, political and institutional areas, and that it is up to the authorities to address them with prudence and patience. The Government has already appointed Henry Cucalón as the new minister of the area, according to ‘El Universo’.
Taking stock of his administration, Jiménez recalled that during the period in which he has headed the Ministry of Government, Ecuador has gone through complicated periods, especially marked by «the terrible days of the national strike», the clashes between the political class and the numerous riots in prisons.
Jimenez’s resignation, in addition to the resignations of several governors of the country, comes after the ‘no’ vote won by a narrow margin in last weekend’s constitutional referendum in which a series of reforms to the Ecuadorian Constitution were proposed.
After the failure in the vote, President Lasso has remarked that the result of the referendum -which is not yet definitive despite the clear advantage of the rejection of the same- means «a call from the people to the Government», reason for which he already anticipated that his cabinet was not going to «avoid this responsibility».
