Cardona had an arrest warrant issued by a Court of Control of Guarantees of Antioquia, for the crimes of illegal exploitation of a mining site, conspiracy to commit a crime and bribery.
According to information gathered by Colombian radio station RCN Radio, Colonel Cardona had been in charge of the Police Command in Chocó for two years, during which time he allegedly committed the crimes.
The department of Chocó, located in the northwest of Colombia and bordering Panama, is the scene of operations by National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas, the Gulf Clan and other gangs.
