The European Union has reacted with «satisfaction and relief» to the release and deportation of more than 200 «political prisoners» in Nicaragua and has reached out to the government of Daniel Ortega to engage in a «political dialogue».
The EU External Action Service has stated that these people «should not have spent a single day in prison» and thanked the United States for its role in not only arranging the trip but also offering initial emergency support to those released.
For the EU, this is «a positive and expected step» that should precede «more actions» by the Nicaraguan authorities, which it has criticized for having adopted reprisals against the prisoners, such as stripping them of their nationality and their civil and political rights.
The Nicaraguan National Assembly approved in an extraordinary meeting a constitutional reform which implies the withdrawal of citizenship from all «traitors to the homeland».
President Daniel Ortega assured that the deportation of the 222 prisoners was not the result of a «negotiation or barter» with Washington, but was due to a matter of principle. Joe Biden’s government has also ruled out any kind of compensation to the Central American country.
