A man accused of blasphemy in Pakistan has been killed by a mob despite being in police custody in an incident that has also so far resulted in the suspension of two police officers from Punjab province in east-central Pakistan.
Hundreds of people ended up forcibly taking over the police station where the accused was being held, in Nankana Sahib, while the officers escaped the wrath of the demonstrators.
Inspector General of Police in the province, Usman Anwar, has confirmed to the daily ‘Dawn’ the suspension of two senior police station officials — Superintendent Nawaz Waraq and duty officer Feroz Bhatti — for dereliction of duty in yet another incident involving so-called «religious vigilantes» who stir up the population to attack alleged blasphemers.
