The Chilean government reported on Monday that 303 fires have been detected in the country as a whole, of which 82 are «in combat», that is, uncontrolled, three more than on Sunday.
«There are 303 fires nationwide. 82 are in combat, three more than yesterday,» said the Chilean government’s Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve. To these must be added 38 fires under observation, 149 controlled and 34 extinguished, according to the Chilean newspaper ‘El Mercurio’.
Monsalve emphasized that 61 aircraft from the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) and 38 from forestry companies have been mobilized, that is, a total of 117 aircraft. «It is less than yesterday, but it is the amount that has been considered, from the technical point of view, necessary for firefighting,» he explained.
In addition, there are more than 750 foreign brigades fighting forest fires in the Andean country, including firefighters, military and specialists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Portugal and Venezuela.
In the case of Spain, more than 50 forest firefighters and experts from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge and from five autonomous communities are collaborating in the tasks of extinguishing the serious forest fires in Chile.
In the total fire season of the austral summer, 425,000 hectares have been burned by fire.
