The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Peruvian Congress approved on Tuesday a motion declaring Colombian President Gustavo Petro ‘persona non grata’, following criticism of his handling of the protests and the arrest of former President Pedro Castillo.

The decision is motivated, explains the motion, by the «unacceptable public statements» of President Petro on the actions of the forces of law and order during violently repressed protests, which have already left more than 60 dead after little more than two months.

«In Peru they march like Nazis against their own people, breaking the American Convention on Human Rights», which should not be applied only against leftist governments, as it would be an exercise of «double standards», as he said that weekend at an event in which ambassadors presented him their credentials.

In this motion -approved with 13 votes in favor, three abstentions and none against- this parliamentary commission has qualified as a «serious offense» the declarations of Petro, who together with other regional leaders such as the Mexican Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been very critical with the management of the Peruvian political crisis.

In addition to declaring him ‘persona non grata’, the document asks Congress to urge the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs to do everything possible, according to their competencies, to prevent Petro from entering the country, reports ‘La República’.
