Russia’s Defense Ministry warned Tuesday that Ukraine is preparing an «information provocation» through which it will accuse Moscow of violating national nuclear security for its Chernobyl operations in the framework of the war.

«The Kiev regime, with the support of the United States and European countries, is completing the preparation of a large-scale information provocation to accuse the Russian Federation (…) of a ‘gross violation’ of obligations under the Convention on Nuclear Safety,» reads a statement from the Russian ministry.

According to Moscow, Kiev is collecting alleged «weighty evidence» confirming that Russia has caused «radioactive contamination of important territories of Ukraine» as a result of military operations in Chernobyl and its exclusion zone between February and April 2022, during the early stages of the war.

The communiqué from the Russian Interdepartmental Coordination Headquarters for Humanitarian Response points directly to February 22 as the key date for this accusation, coinciding with the start of a special session of the United Nations General Assembly, just two days before the first anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict in Eastern Europe.

For Moscow, the main objective of this Ukrainian «provocation» operation is to create the right breeding ground for the countries that do not support sanctions against Russia to vote in favor of the so-called «peace formula» proposed by the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky.
