Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi began his first official visit to Syria since the outbreak of the war on Wednesday, as part of a trip to convey Amman’s «solidarity» with the victims of last week’s earthquakes in southern Turkey, near the common border.
According to information published by the Syrian state news agency SANA, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received Safadi in Damascus, a meeting in which the President stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation.
«Due to the geographical and popular relationship between the two countries, the two peoples live facing similar challenges and circumstances at many levels, which at the same time creates opportunities for joint action in fields that benefit the twinned peoples,» he explained.
For his part, Safadi conveyed to Al Assad the condolences of King Abdullah II of Jordan for the earthquakes and stressed the «absolute solidarity» of Amman with Damascus, while offering «all possible assistance» to those affected, as reported by the Jordanian state news agency Petra.
«We are affected by what is happening in sister Syria,» said the Jordanian foreign minister, who stressed that the authorities have sent «many planes and trucks» with aid, actions carried out «in coordination with the brothers of the Syrian government.»
Safadi’s visit to Syria is part of a trip in which he will also travel to Turkey, a tour in which he seeks to address the humanitarian situation and the delivery of supplies to both countries to assist the victims of the earthquakes, which have left nearly 40,000 dead.
Jordan has so far sent several shipments of aid to Turkey and Syria, despite the fact that bilateral relations with Damascus were severely damaged by the outbreak of war in 2011 due to the brutal repression of pro-democracy demonstrations in the wake of the so-called ‘Arab Spring’.
