The leader of the British Labour Party, Keir Starmer, has assured Wednesday that the former secretary general of the party Jeremy Corbyn will not run as a candidate for the party in the general election scheduled for January 2025.
In an attempt to renew the party’s image under his leadership, Starmer, who had previously advocated vetoing any attempt by Corbyn to run in such a process, has now publicly stated that it is not an option.
«Let me be clear. Jeremy Corbyn will not stand in the next election as Labour’s candidate,» he has asserted before stating that «the party is not going back to the past, and Jeremy Corbyn will not stand as a candidate.»
His words come at an «important» moment for Labour after the Equality Commission for Human Rights in the United Kingdom now said that the formation has taken appropriate measures to address anti-Semitism after the controversy unleashed when Corbyn was at the helm.
Starmer has asked Corbyn’s main supporters to leave the party if they wish to do so and if they do not agree with his stance on the issue, according to reports in ‘The Guardian’ newspaper.
Corbyn was at the head of the formation for five years but resigned after poor election results in 2019. If he were to run as an independent candidate it could pose a dilemma for the party’s rank and file.
