Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu, has formed a legal team to deal with fraud claims brought by his two main opponents, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labor Party, against his victory in last week’s polls.
Nigeria’s main opposition parties on Tuesday demanded a rerun of the elections and argued that the elections are »irreparably compromised» and denounced a manipulation of the results due to delays in the publication of the results on the Internet.
As a first step, Tinubu’s team will file a legal initiative against Obi, who will be accused of inventing his own vote estimates, reports the Nigerian daily ‘Vanguard’.
The party’s Communication Policy advisor, Dele Alake, has particularly targeted Obi, who he said has aspirations to become the »most dangerous politician» in Nigeria.
»He elevated his well-known clan mentality to a very unfortunate level by openly basing his campaign on religion and ethnicity, when in reality he has ended up becoming the ‘poster boy’ for division in our country,» Alake lamented.
All in all, Alake somewhat derisively thanked the opponents for abandoning their initial calls for popular mobilization.
I want to thank them for finally betting on the rule of law instead of the initial belligerent stance on their way during a groundless journey in pursuit of a mirage,» he added.
Tinubu will succeed Muhammadu Buhari, who could not run because he has already served the term limit set by the Nigerian Constitution.
The elections were the first occasion since the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999 in which none of the candidates is a former military leader, as was the case with Buhari, who was already in charge of the country between December 1983 and August 1985 after a coup d’état.
