U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that the recent assault on her husband will affect her decision on her political future after this Tuesday’s midterm elections.
In an interview with CNN, Pelosi said that the attack on Paul Pelosi while he was at his home in San Francisco has raised new concerns about the threats of political violence in the country, which will affect the decision of the Democratic Party policy.
Asked if she had made a decision on what she would do in the future, with emphasis on the case of the Republicans regaining power in the House of Representatives, Pelosi confessed that «there has been a lot of discussion» on whether she would retire if the Democrats lose the Lower House.
However, she remarked that «the decision will be affected by what happened in the last week or two», alleging that the attack on her husband will have a notable influence on her decision.
With Paul Pelosi released from the hospital late last week, the Speaker has returned to Washington, where she will remain on election night. A large congressional delegation leaves this week for a global summit on climate change in Egypt, and while it is unclear whether Pelosi will join those lawmakers, some are hoping for clarity on her decision before the lawmakers take off.
If Pelosi does step down from House leadership, many Democrats expect her to finish her term and possibly return next year to the party’s rank and file, as she might consider the perfect time to step down altogether, Democratic Party sources have told ‘The Washington Post’.
