A group of pro-government deputies will file a petition with the Russian Prosecutor’s Office requesting that the environmental NGO Greenpeace be classified as «undesirable» under one of the many laws that limit the activity of civil society organizations, especially foreign ones, in the country.

United Russia MP Alexander Yakubovsky confirmed on his Telegram profile an agreement to bring Greenpeace’s activities before the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the first step towards the NGO’s inclusion on a ‘blacklist’ that has expanded in recent months in the wake of the start of the military offensive in Ukraine.

The law makes it possible to limit or even prohibit the activities of organizations on the basis of ambiguous considerations relating to the origin of their funds or the activity they carry out within Russia, especially if it is understood that their work is contrary to the interests of the state or jeopardizes national security.

Greenpeace has maintained its activity in Russia in recent months, despite the growing crackdown on NGOs, and has continued to call for greater commitments on environmental issues, with complaints concerning, for example, the state of Lake Baikal, located in the Siberian area.
