Democrat Maura Healey has become the governor of the U.S. state of Massachusetts after outpolling Republican Geoff Diehl, making her the first openly lesbian woman to run for office in the United States.

Healey, 51, will be the first openly LGBT person to govern a state in the country after winning with more than 60 percent of the votes to the candidate nominated by former President Donald Trump, according to U.S. media reports.

Thus, the Democratic Party has snatched from the Republicans the governorship of Massachusetts, which was previously led by politician Charlie Baker.

The LGBT rights advocacy group ‘Human Rights Campaign’ has welcomed Healey’s historic victory, stating that the state has opted for equality and inclusion.

«Maura Healey is the new governor of Massachusetts! As one of our nation’s first lesbian governors, she will not only be a champion for pro-equality policies, but also a role model for the entire LGBT community,» reads a statement issued by the association on its Twitter account.
