Democratic candidate John Fetterman has won the Republican Senate seat in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, bringing the Democratic Party closer to gaining control of the lower house.

After a close vote count, the current lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania has won a Senate seat by a narrow margin of just over 100,000 votes with 91 percent of the vote counted, according to U.S. media reports.

On the other hand, the incumbent, Mehmet Oz, has not obtained the necessary support to revalidate his seat in the Senate, making it difficult for the Republican Party to win in both chambers, although it is likely that they will gain control of the House of Representatives.

Fetterman has been able to win the sympathy of Pennsylvanians, although a stroke suffered in May could at one point put his candidacy at risk.
