The European Union (EU) has condemned on Wednesday «in the strongest terms» the attacks carried out over the weekend against several camps for displaced people in the Syrian province of Idlib (northwest) and pointed to the Syrian Army, supported by «Russian bombing», as responsible.

«On November 6, the Syrian regime, supported by Russian shelling, attacked camps hosting displaced civilians near the city of Idlib,» said a spokesman for the European External Action Service, who recalled that nine people were killed and more than 75 wounded.

Thus, he stressed that 400 families residing in these facilities «are facing a new displacement» and stressed that «all parties to the conflict in Syria have an obligation under international law to protect the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure».

«The EU calls on the regime and its allies to stop indiscriminate military attacks and to respect humanitarian law. These incidents must be investigated without delay and those responsible must be held accountable,» he said.

Finally, he reiterated the EU’s call for a «nationwide ceasefire» and advocated «a political solution to the conflict in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254». «The EU will continue to support the efforts of the UN special envoy (for Syria), Geir Pedersen, in this regard,» he concluded.

The EU’s condemnation came a day after the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights showed its «grave concern» over recent shelling and artillery attacks on displaced persons camps and indicated that there are «worrying signs of a new upsurge in hostilities» in this part of the country.
