The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has expressed his solidarity with those affected by the earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale that shook Ecuador on Saturday, leaving 14 dead and more than a thousand people affected.

»I want to express the EU’s solidarity with the victims and convey our support to the Ecuadorian people in these difficult times,» he posted via his Twitter account. »The EU is ready to provide assistance».

The latest balance sheet confirms the figure of 14 dead, and reports 491 injured and 1,189 people affected.

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, announced on Sunday a state of emergency to deal with the consequences of the earthquake, which has destroyed 90 homes and damaged 251.

The state of emergency seeks to accelerate procedures and disbursements for repairs, as well as to establish a rental voucher for those affected by the earthquake.

It also includes the management of emergency funds in multilateral organizations and the collection of insurance payments for affected public property, as reported by the newspaper ‘Primicias’.
