An officer from a special unit of the German police was wounded Wednesday in a shooting during a raid in the southwest of the country against the far-right group Citizens of the Reich, which sought to overthrow the German government.

The incident took place in the city of Reutlingen, in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, during an operation by security forces at the request of the German Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Sources close to the case have reported that the officer is out of danger after being transferred to a local hospital, while the alleged gunman has been arrested.

Authorities have launched a series of measures against the group, which says it does not recognize the German state and has been the subject of several raids and searches over the past year. Some of the movement’s members have been accused of trying to overthrow the executive.

Last December, more than 20 suspects, including the former deputy of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, were arrested. Those arrested are allegedly members of the organization, whose alleged ringleaders have been identified as ‘Rudiger’ and ‘Prince Henrich XIII’. The latter would be the great-great-grandson of Wilhelm II of Germany, the last German emperor and king of Prussia, who was forced to abdicate in 1918 after World War I.
