The Taliban claimed Wednesday to have killed three «important members» of the jihadist group Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) in the framework of a new security operation in the capital, Kabul, without revealing their identities for the moment.
The Taliban spokesman and Afghan Deputy Information Minister, Zabihullah Mujahid, said on his Twitter account that the operation took place in the district of Batjak Charahi and added that weapons, hand grenades and explosives were seized during the operation.
»Islamic State used this hideout to carry out attacks in Kabul,» he said, before stressing that the suspects »planned to target holy sites and civilians during the month of Ramadan. Thank God, these plans were discovered and have been destroyed in advance,» he said, before stressing that there have been no casualties among security forces and civilians.
ISKP, which considers the Taliban to be traitors to the orthodoxy of ‘sharia’ or Islamic law and advocates a much harsher interpretation, has been the target of a Taliban security campaign. The jihadist group has carried out dozens of attacks since the Taliban seized power in August 2021 after the then Afghan president Ashraf Ghani fled the country in the face of their military advance on the capital.
