Thai authorities have shot dead a man responsible for a shooting rampage that left three people dead and three others injured after barricading himself in a home in Mueang district for 15 hours.

The 29-year-old man, identified as Anuwat Laemthong, began shooting at 13.37 (local time) from the second floor of a home, reports ‘Bangkok Post’. Nearly 100 police officers were rushed to the scene and tried to convince the man to drop his weapons without success.

The deceased, who have also been identified, were three men who were not involved in the conflict and were walking down the street when Laemthong started shooting. Two of the wounded are police officers, and the third is a woman who was also walking down the street when the shooting began.

At around 7 p.m., negotiating teams brought the attacker’s mother to the vicinity of where he was still barricaded, to try to dissuade him, also without success. The governor of Phetchaburi, Natthachai Namphunsuksan, also tried to talk to him, but he did not budge and continued shooting.

Finally, at 03.33 a.m. on Thursday, the police entered the house and confronted the attacker for ten minutes, until he was finally shot dead.

Police have reported that Laemthong had been involved in legal proceedings since November 2022, and cite a court appearance scheduled for this Wednesday as the possible reason for the crime.
