Jill Biden calls on men to stand up for women’s rights
U.S. First Lady Jill Biden urged men to step up and fight for the protection of women’s rights during a Women’s History Month event at the White House.
More commitment from men
Biden lamented that women once again find themselves litigating «battles we thought we had won long ago.» «We need more men to hold each other accountable when harm or setbacks are caused to women,» he added.
Historic and controversial decision
In June of last year, the Supreme Court issued a landmark decision allowing states to ban abortion. Since then, there has been a flurry of restrictive measures at the state level by Republican-controlled Congresses across the country.
More complicated access
These provisions have reduced the time in which women can make the decision to terminate a pregnancy and have made access to abortion more difficult.
Intense debate
The Supreme Court’s decision has generated an intense debate on the right of women to decide over their own bodies and has provoked a large mobilization of reproductive rights activists.
Improving the economic status of women
President Joe Biden pledged that his administration will keep improving the economic status of women as a priority and affirmed that every major issue facing the nation – from public safety to public health – is directly related to improving the economic security and well-being of that segment of the population.
Working to improve women’s future
«We must renew our commitment to work to improve the future of our nation’s daughters,» he said.
