Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, approved Friday that three of the country’s nuclear power plants will remain in operation at least until mid-April to guarantee electricity supply in the midst of the energy crisis.

The continued operation of the ‘Isar 2’, ‘Neckarwestheim 2’ and ‘Emsland’ plants has received the approval of the deputies of the government coalition of the Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, formed by the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Democratic Party.

Thus, the vote was resolved with 375 votes in favor of the amendment of the Atomic Energy Act, 216 against and 70 abstentions. The measure now passes to the Upper House of Parliament.

The plants were to be shut down by the end of the year as part of the government’s policy to reduce the use of nuclear power. However, Scholz recently advocated continuing the use of these plants until the gas crisis is resolved.
