Police in New York City, in the eastern United States, on Friday shot a man in the Coney Island area of southern Brooklyn after he allegedly threatened to shoot two women.

According to police authorities, two of their officers heard gunshots in the area and later saw two women running towards them as they warned of the presence of a possible attacker.

The emergency services then received two calls alerting them to the incident, while ShotSpotter technology, a gunshot detection system, was also activated, according to NBC News.

When the police arrived at the scene of the incident, they found that, as soon as they got out of the vehicles, the suspect «immediately started shooting at them», as detailed by the chief of the police patrol, Jeffrey Maddrey.

The officers then fired shots in response. Maddrey noted the possibility that four officers opened fire, although it is not yet clear how many were fired or the number of bullets fired in the exchange.

The suspect eventually dropped to the ground, but still continued to fire at the officers until, once he stopped, the officers approached him in an unsuccessful attempt to save his life from the gunshot wounds he had sustained.

The authorities are now investigating the identity of the deceased and the nature of the incident, although initial indications are that it was a case of domestic violence involving the two women who alerted the police.
