Former U.S. President George W. Bush and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski will hold a public conversation next week in which the former White House chief will emphasize continuing to help Kiev as voices grow in the Republican Party questioning staying in this war.
«Ukraine is on the front lines in the fight for freedom and democracy. It is vitally important that the United States provide assistance, military and otherwise to help defend itself,» George W. Bush Institute global policy director David Kramer has said, CNN reports.
The event will take place next Wednesday in Dallas and will be held under the name ‘Fight for Freedom’ and will be the second one between the two since the private meeting they had earlier this year, after which Bush described the Ukrainian president as the «Winston Churchill of our time».
Aware of that faction within the Republican Party that increasingly questions whether Washington is paying for this war, Kramer has insisted that staying in it is good for the United States, since the conflict affects the «average American citizen» in some way.
«I think we need to put party politics aside and recognize that U.S. support for Ukraine is vitally important (…) There are those who say this is none of our business, we have enough problems at home and why are we spending money on this? In our opinion it is our business because it affects us and can affect the average American,» he defended.
Among those who have questioned America’s continued presence in the war is House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is confident of taking office next year if the results of this week’s midterm elections are confirmed.
In addition to Zelenski, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing Wen is also scheduled to participate in the event via a recording.
