At least three minors and three adults have been shot and killed by a heavily armed teenage girl who stormed the Presbyterian College of the Covenant, a private early childhood and elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday. The attacker died after police intervened.
The attacker entered the school through a side entrance armed with two assault rifles and a handgun and killed three children and three school workers, the Nashville Police said in a press conference reported by the local press.
The officers entered through the first floor at 10:27 am. They heard gunshots on the second floor and finally managed to shoot down the woman, whose identity and age have not been disclosed although »seems to be a teenager».
Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville had previously confirmed three minors and two adults. »Three pediatric patients have been transported to Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, all with gunshot wounds. All three have been pronounced dead upon arrival» at the facility, the hospital said, according to local NBC affiliate WSMV television.
A meeting point for victims and family members has been set up at the Woodmont Baptist Church at 2100 Woodmont Boulevard, police said.
All area hospitals are on alert, local news portal Scoop Nashville has reported.
Nashville Mayor John Cooper posted a message on social media. »On this tragic morning Nashville has joined the fateful list of communities that have experienced a school shooting. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. The entire city is with you,» he said.
News is still coming in, but I want to thank the emergency services and health care professionals,» Cooper added.
