The African Union (AU) on Tuesday appealed for calm following the latest anti-government protests in Kenya, which on Monday resulted in one death, and called for dialogue to »address all differences».
AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed in a statement his »deep concern» over the violent incidents of the last week and called on all parties for a dialogue »in line with the paramount interest of national unity and reconciliation».
Thus, it has pointed to the »successful holding» of the general elections of August 2022 and the »unanimous confirmation» of the results by the Supreme Court, which ratified the victory of William Ruto, a decision rejected by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who denounced fraud.
The chairman (of the AU Commission) reiterates the total solidarity and support to the Government and the people of Kenya in their efforts to work towards national unity, peace and stability in the country,» the organization reiterated in a statement published on its website.
During the day on Monday a demonstrator was killed in the repression of the protests in Kisumu (west), while about a hundred people broke into a farm owned by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi.
After that, a second group of people caused material damage to the headquarters of the company East Africa Spectre Limited, linked to Odinga’s family, with no arrests so far. The former prime minister again called on his supporters to demonstrate peacefully against the government.
Odinga has called for demonstrations every Monday and Thursday to protest against the high cost of living and against the government, which he considers illegitimate for considering fraudulent the elections of August 2022, to which he ran with the support of Kenyatta.
