Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba has described as »a bad joke» that Russia is to assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this Saturday, considering that it »has been waging a colonial war» since February 2022, when it launched a military offensive on Ukrainian territory.
The main executive body of the United Nations has 15 members, among which there are five permanent – and veto-wielding – members, such as Russia. The system allows the presidency of the Council to rotate on a monthly basis among all the countries, so this April it is Russia’s turn to hold the presidency.
Russia has usurped its place,» said Kuleba, whose government has been calling for a year for greater forcefulness against Moscow at the UN. »The world cannot be a safe place with Russia in the Security Council,» the minister added, using the hashtag #InsecurityCouncil in his message.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is »a war criminal» and recalled that he is already under arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the deportation of children.
