Two children and an adult were killed last Saturday by the explosion of abandoned ammunition in the central Afghan province of Maidan Wardak, in a new incident related to the endemic danger posed to the population, particularly children, by mines and unexploded shells after decades of conflict.
In fact, in another similar incident last Friday, a man was killed and two other children were wounded in the southern province of Zabul, police sources told DPA.
Last week, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) again warned about this situation, recalling that in the penultimate week of last month, abandoned ammunition cost the lives of eight children.
The agency also recalled that, in 2022, at least 700 children were killed or maimed as a result, an average of two a day, usually while playing in the open or working for scrap metal to survive.
