Russia’s attacks on the town of Bajmut, currently the main battlefront in this war, have more than doubled in intensity in recent days, a soldier of the Special Operations Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has told on condition of anonymity in an interview.
This soldier said that they have gone from seeing how the owner of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeni Prigozhin, protested against the alleged lack of support from the Russian Army to suffering an offensive from Moscow »twice as strong».
»The enemy had enough problems with ammunition, Wagner’s chief said they had none and could not continue the attacks. That was wonderful for us, we were able to attack and ambush their units, but it was all over very quickly,» he said in an interview broadcast on Armed Forces channels.
»They brought them ammunition, artillery and the air strikes have become twice as strong,» he said. Despite the heavy casualties suffered by the Russian side, he said that the dead are being quickly replaced. They are «going over the heads of their own brothers,» he said.
At the same time, he warned of the risks of underestimating Russia, as it has its own »motivation»: the destruction of Ukraine. »Russia will never be forgiven, its forces (…) believe in their own, but thoughtlessness and blind faith in orders do not absolve them of guilt (…) It is too late for forgiveness», he said.
A little more than thirteen months into the war, Bajmut is now the new main arena where Russians and Ukrainians measure their forces. Nestled in the Donetsk region, Moscow aspires to take control of it as one of the main centers from which Kiev supplies its troops on the eastern front.
As the weeks go by, Moscow and Kiev boast that they are getting closer and closer to victory on this front. This week, the Wagner Group claimed to have taken control of Bajmut, a statement that was quickly denied by Kiev.
