House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Tuesday of »interfering» in the 2024 election, in which former President Donald Trump will run with the goal of returning to the White House.
Alvin Bragg is attempting to interfere in our democratic process by invoking federal law (and) bringing politicized charges against President Trump, of course using federal funds, while at the same time arguing that the people’s representatives in Congress lack jurisdiction to investigate this farce,» he said on his official Twitter profile.
In this regard, he stressed that Bragg, with the indictment of the former president, who has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records, »instrumentalizes» federal justice, so he will have to »be accountable» to Congress.
Trump appeared Tuesday before a Manhattan court in the case of the alleged bribery of porn actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, for which he faces 34 first-degree charges, considered by New York state law as »felonies».
Trump was indicted last week for the possible secret payment of $ 130,000 (more than 120,000 euros) to Clifford by the former lawyer of former President Michael Cohen. The case dates back to 2006 but did not see the light until 2018, when Stormy Daniels pointed directly and in public to the tycoon for an alleged extramarital affair that carried multiple legal derivatives.
The fact in question would not have gone beyond being one of the multiple accusations of infidelity or even harassment poured against Trump in recent years if it were not for the fact that in 2016, a few days before the elections that brought the Republican leader to the White House, Daniels received a payment of $ 130,000.
With this money, in which Trump’s then lawyer Michael Cohen mediated, the tycoon was allegedly guaranteed Clifford’s silence. The actress alleges that she accepted the money out of fear for the safety of her family.
