
An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale has shaken the coast of Panama on Tuesday, with no possible casualties or material damage reported by the authorities.
The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama has specified that the earthquake took place at 17.18 hours (00.18 Spanish peninsular time).
The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, 90 kilometers from the island of Coiba, on the Pacific coast of the country. The tremor was strongly felt in the province of Chiriqui, in the south of Panama, also in Bocas del Toro -in the north- and in the capital.
The Panamanian National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has carried out a monitoring and, for the moment, has not registered affected persons or structural damages. However, it has issued a prevention warning for a possible tsunami as a consequence of the earthquake.
The earthquake has also caused that a soccer match, between Atlético Chiriquí and Universitario, which was to take place at the San Cristóbal de David stadium, has been suspended, according to the newspaper ‘El Siglo’.
