A spokesman for the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Ahmed al Sahhaf, has confirmed that Iraq has decided to reopen its embassy in Libya, in a statement to the Ina news agency.
The decision comes in response to the desire to »resume diplomatic work to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, in order to provide services to the honorable Iraqi community,» al Sahhaf said.
In mid-March, the country had already announced its intention to restore diplomatic relations with Tripoli, an effort aided by several meetings between the authorities of the two countries.
Al Sahhaf explained then that part of his country’s intentions were to reaffirm its support for international efforts to restore peace and security in Libya, as well as to opt, through political means, to fulfill the Libyan people’s aspirations of this kind.
Libya remains in political chaos. The roadmap for elections, initially scheduled for the end of 2021, is completely paralyzed by the conflict between Tripoli and the parallel authorities in the east of the country, and the security of the population is threatened by sporadic clashes between armed groups.
