The Iranian government has appointed Reza Ameri as the new Iranian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after an eight-year vacancy and amid a process of rapprochement following the signing in March of an agreement between Tehran and Riyadh to restore their diplomatic relations.
According to reports carried by the Iranian news agency Mehr, Ameri, who is now director general of the office for Iranians abroad within the Foreign Ministry, will soon travel to Abu Dhabi to take up his post.
The UAE sent back its ambassador to Iran in September 2022, more than six years after downgrading its ties with Tehran in the wake of Saudi Arabia’s decision to cut ties with the Iranian government in January 2016 following an assault on its embassy in Tehran during a protest over the execution of a prominent Saudi Shiite cleric.
The agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume their diplomatic relations has been applauded by countries in the region and has opened the possibility for a reduction of disputes between the two countries in the Middle East, including the conflict in Yemen. In addition, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani indicated on Tuesday that it also opened the door to improved relations with Gulf countries, including Bahrain, with which Tehran has a tense relationship.
