U.S. President Joe Biden met on Monday with his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo, in Bali, where he conveyed his support to the Asian country before the Presidency of the G20, while announcing bilateral cooperation in energy and health.

Biden congratulated Indonesia for the success -and the Presidency- of the G20, while he expressed his support «for the leadership» of the country in the Indo-Pacific, which he called «the third largest democracy in the world».

The U.S. leader has also highlighted Jakarta as «a strong defender of the rules-based international order.» «Indonesia is a critical partner and a great democracy,» Biden added in statements to the press, according to a White House press release.

The two leaders have discussed ways to strengthen the Strategic Partnership between the two countries, as well as Widodo’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023.

High on their agenda is a partnership on clean energy and combating pandemics. «Tomorrow, we will unveil a transformative new partnership to support Indonesia’s clean energy,» the U.S. leader has announced.

«Together we seek a better future. We have finalized a new partnership through Millennium Challenge Corporation to invest nearly $700 million (a similar figure in euros) in the development of high-quality transportation infrastructure here in Indonesia,» Biden explained.
