South Korean authorities on Tuesday expressed their »firm» protest to the Japanese government’s stance on its territorial sovereignty over the Dokdo Islands, known in Japan as Takeshima.
Thus, they have stressed that these disputed islands are part of »South Korean territory historically and geographically within the framework of international law» and criticized the Japanese diplomatic blue book, published on Tuesday.
In this regard, he called for the »immediate» withdrawal of such statements. In the future, the government will respond forcefully to any unreasonable remarks about the Dokdo islands,» the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
»The Japanese government should clearly know that such unreasonable remarks about the islands do not help build and improve relations between the two countries,» they said.
The disputed islands lie between Japan and South Korea and came under South Korean jurisdiction after World War II. However, Japan has repeatedly referred to the situation as an »illegal occupation» of the islands, which it considers part of its Shimane prefecture.
