Police in Northern Ireland on Thursday opened an investigation into a possible »security breach» surrounding President Joe Biden’s visit to Northern Ireland after finding a series of documents about the president’s itinerary.
The documents, which included details of the U.S. president’s visit and security deployment, were handed over to police officers on Wednesday after being found on a street in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, near the hotel where the U.S. delegation is staying, as the BBC reported at the time.
The Northern Ireland Police Force, for its part, has said it »takes seriously the safety of visiting dignitaries» and has defended that the officers have »taken very seriously» what happened.
The U.S. Secret Service has indicated that it has been informed of the discovery and has clarified that »the president’s movements have not been affected since the team does not deal with protection issues».
Sources close to the matter have specified in declarations to CNN that »they rely on the European and Irish partners to guarantee Biden’s security during his visit».
