The White House has labeled as »extremely dangerous» the proposal approved Thursday by the Florida Congress that would ban abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy.
The rule, approved by the Republican majority in the House and awaiting the signature of the governor, Ron DeSantis, would only allow abortion after the 15th week for victims of rape, incest or trafficking, provided they can show a restraining order, a police report or other evidence.
This ban violates fundamental freedoms and is far from the views of the vast majority of people in Florida and the United States,» White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
The message is clear: Americans demand the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies without government interference,» she said.
Such a ban would make the state one of the most restrictive on reproductive health in the country, with the opposition pointing out that by the sixth week of pregnancy, people are often unaware that they are even pregnant.
A CONSERVATIVE WAVE AGAINST ABORTION IN THE UNITED STATES DeSantis signed last year a ban on abortion beyond the 15th week, without marking on that occasion exceptions for rape or other cases that now would be contemplated, in a state that until then had been a destination for many women from neighboring states with even stricter bans, according to CNN.
This new measure comes days after a Texas court banned one of the most widely used abortion pills in the country, a decision that the White House itself has denounced and has been partially overturned by an appeals court.
Florida is one of the leading Republican states in the growing conservative push to repeal abortion rights in the country, which began when the Supreme Court overturned in June 2022 the legal precedent that allowed the termination of pregnancy since 1973.
