The South Korean Army announced Sunday that one of its ships fired warning shots at a North Korean patrol boat for crossing the so-called Northern Limit Line, the maritime border between the two countries, this past Saturday morning.
The North Korean patrol boat crossed the border at around 11:00 a.m. in the waters off South Korea’s Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, prompting the immediate deployment of a Chamsuri-class patrol boat, according to a statement from South Korea’s Army Staff Board, reported by the country’s official news agency Yonhap.
The South Korean Army says the raiding ship »did not respond to warnings or communication attempts,» so the South Korean ship fired ten warning shots from its automatic cannon, prompting the North Korean patrol boat to return to its waters.
Agency sources point out that the North Korean ship was pursuing a Chinese fishing vessel prior to the incursion. This trawler, in fact, ended up colliding with the South Korean patrol boat, injuring three sailors, one of whom had to undergo surgery for a fracture.
