Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has stated in recent days to his allies that his political plan is to run for senator in the 2026 elections.
Bolsonaro considers that this action could provide him with the possibility of leading a bloc in the Upper House that is formed by parliamentarians who identify with him, reports the newspaper ‘Folha de S.Paulo’.
For the president, the best options are those where Bolsonarism is strongest, such as Mato Grosso and Rondônia, which are located in the west, bordering Bolivia; or the Federal District.
However, he would have discarded Rio de Janeiro, where he started his political career, since his son Flávio Bolsonaro could run for reelection in this state, where he was elected in 2019, although last month he admitted that he plans to run for mayor of this city.
On the other hand, according to the aforementioned newspaper, his son Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is a deputy for Sao Paulo, could also propose his name to the Senate.
However, the former president’s intention to lead a group in the Senate can only be realized if Justice allows him to do so before the 2026 elections, since he has 16 investigations that could disqualify him.
