German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned the «irresponsible nuclear threat gestures» launched by Russia, in the framework of a G20 summit in which Russian President Vladimir Putin is not participating, despite being on the official guest list.
«President Putin is deliberately pursuing a new escalation,» Scholz lamented in his speech. The chancellor hopes that the summit will serve to send a «clear and common signal» that the use of atomic armaments, and even the mere threat, «are and remain inadmissible.»
Scholz warned that Putin and his followers will be responsible for the serious economic and social crisis that has spread throughout the world and stressed that the «vast majority» of those attending the forum in Indonesia condemn the offensive launched in February on Ukraine.
The war in Ukraine takes up much of the discussion at the G20 leaders’ meeting. The Russian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
