A Parliamentary watchdog has launched an investigation into Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for allegedly failing to notify his wife’s involvement in a childcare company that could benefit from a measure announced by the current government.
Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt specifically announced a pilot of payments for new babysitters, with more money going to those who signed up through an agency. One of these companies, Koru Kids, lists Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty, as a shareholder.
The enforcement body within Parliament will now examine whether Sunak has been involved in any wrongdoing, although Downing Street has said they will work together to »make clear» that the prime minister has been »transparent» in declaring all his potential interests, according to the BBC.
If this preliminary investigation determines that Sunak may have violated the code of conduct in some way, the case may end up in a commission that may, if necessary, adopt sanctions against the head of government.
Sunak had already claimed last month that he declared »in a normal manner» all his potential interests, after there was evidence in early March of his wife’s involvement in Koru Kids. The couple accumulates an estimated total wealth of some 850 million euros.
